In a new book on President Dwight Eisenhower and civil rights, David Nichols argues that Ike's contributions to the civil rights movement are largely forgotten, but that Ike did push for more change than he commonly receives credit for. BPA has yet to read this book but is curious to know how Nichols treats Ike's regret of nominating Earl Warren to the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. It is widely reported that Eisenhower famously claimed this nomination was the biggest mistake he made while president. If true, that casts doubt on Eisenhower's support for federal intervention in civil rights. Additionally, were Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus not such a bungling idiot, would Eisenhower ever intervened in forcing local school districts to obey the law.
