Recently, Michelle Obama courted controversy with the following statement:
“For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country,” she told a Milwaukee crowd today, “and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change.”
Here are some people's thoughts on the issue.
People mainly appear upset because apparently she has nothing to be proud of. (Here's Cindy McCain's take on Mrs. Obama's comments.)
Not necessarily. Like with my class I stress that grammar matters. Notice that she said "really proud." That is a a big distinction from merely "proud." She's not saying she's never been proud of America.
Nonetheless, that's just my perspective. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
